Far Away: Haiti

Members of Traverse Bay have a long-term commitment and deep friendship with people of the tiny island nation Haiti. One of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere, 80 percent its people live in poverty. That was true before the devastating earthquake that rocked the nation in January 2010.

The earthquake struck members of our northern Michigan community hard too, as we tried desperately to get in touch with our Haitian friends and to confirm that those families were safe.

We believe the best thing we can do is to make a long-term commitment to one place. We support Haitian artists, orphans, school children, and churches.

“I first traveled to Haiti more than a decade ago to lend a hand to strangers. These days, I go to serve my friends.”
